on a certain petition

My feeling (forgive me) is that taking an ethical stand for academic freedom while overtly reinscribing the two-or-three-or-four-tier class structure of the academy comes unacceptably close to implying that we support academic freedom for the tenured, and that there is no relation between the (presumably external, political, corporate) threats to this freedom and the injustice perpetuated internally by the existence of that class structure. If you sincerely and consistently want to be free thinkers, you have to stop acting as the agents of unfounded or badly-founded hierarchy in the university. Otherwise the function you instantiate is contrary to and much more consequential than the protest you voice.
